In southern California, spring is a difficult time to dress for; it can be scorching hot (like today) or cold and rainy (like the forecast for tomorrow). Because of the bipolar weather, it poses a very difficult question…what do I wear?
When dressing for unpredictable weather, it is best to layer rather than guess at what the day will bring. My mom always tells me to layer when I ask what the weather will be like. And any ways, it really is the best thing to dress for; peel off layer after layer and you have a brand new outfit each time! Unfortunately, many people are reluctant to layer; it is a difficult thing to do, especially if you are afraid of looking bulky, but thankfully there are a few tricks that will keep you looking fashionable as well as prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.
To keep everything looking sleek and slimming, I typically start with a tight base (I.e. Leggings, jeggings, or skinny jeans) by having a sleek base you won’t look frumpy or outdated. I have these fantastic leggings from Target that have these crazy seams that are cute, slimming, and awesome. Honestly, If you need and sort of basic piece, go to Target, what’s the point of shelling out $15 dollars when you can buy a pair of leggings for $5 that work just as well? You might as well same the $15 for a top that looks amazing with everything, like a tunic.
I tend to lean towards tunics or blousy tops (see picture) by having a light flowy top, you balance out the tight bottoms; in addition, you have a pretty, convenient outfit if you get to hot. Tunics are perfect for California weather. You can wear them as cover-ups in the summer, layer them under cardigans for fall and spring.
I love to use my black cardigan as a tool for layering. It is light fits well and can be fit into a purse without a struggle; it is absolutely my fashion staple. A green army jacket and a pretty Urban Outfitters scarf ties the whole look together.
As far as shoes go, you really can’t mess up. You can wear boots, heels, flats, gladiator sandals… you name it! You can really get creative. (Just remember to go very lightly on the jewelry!)
If pants (or leggings) are really just not your thing, or if you are in the mood for something a little more boho and a little less… overdone, you can never go wrong with a long boho skirt, combat boots, and a slim fitted tee shirt. You try to keep it sleek up top to keep it looking fresh.
Layering can keep you looking fashionable (as well as at a conferrable temperature) all year long. You just must remember to pair tight with loose, whether it is a loose skirt and tight top, or loose shirt and tight pants. Layering can be easy, and convenient. Good luck staying cool/keeping warm/having a fantastic spring break.

ReplyDeleteto the girl with the fabulous sweater,
ReplyDeleteits fantastic that you have a grandma with such great style! the big question is really the length and cut of the sweater. if it is a little bit boxy i would wear it with some flared jeans(to give a bit of curve in there somewhere) and maybe some awesome high-heeled boots and an army green jacket ( i found mine at target for $25) if the sweater is longer you can wear it with either black leggings or if you are feeling a bit daring you could wear a printed legging in a contrasting color or some acid wash jeans and some Doc. Martins, and once again your green jacket (or other awesome outerwear!!! haha! Go have fun!!
Everyone thank you so much for the amazing feedback!! i was beginning to think no one liked me!!! HAHA! but I love the comments! And please review as much as you please also I'd love to hear what you have questions on! Maybe I could blog a bit to help you out of a style rut!!
